In the novel Candide, Voltaire uses irony, exaggeration, understatement, sarcasm and other literary devices in order satirize flaws in society. There are two different types of Satire, that of Horace, which mild and lighthearted, and that of Juvenal, called Juvenalian, which is scornful and scathing, very rarely intended to be funny, but rather make a critique of a societal problem, to call for change. Many labels carry meaning that runs deeper than the eye can see. At face value a corporal is just a word used to describe one of the first ranks of an army solider, but that label has depth. Being a corporal could mean constant order taking and back-breaking work. Having a certain label affects everybody not just a person’s immediate friends. A powerful label commands respect and these people are treated with privileges and other special perks because of their label. Many labels come with their own with their own home-grown stereotypes. If a person is labeled a doctor this could mean that they earn a quarter million dollars a year, drive a Mercedes-Benz, and go golfing three times a week. People use labels as the first way to asses a person. When a business man walks into a pub and sees a scantily-clad dressed woman next to a women in a business skirt and blouse, that man will nearly always label the half-dressed women as a slut or desperate while he might label the other as more conservative. People use labels as their first line of defense in a situation when they feel something is not quite right. If a person sees a shady fellow on the corner of the street, that person might automatically label that man as a trouble-maker which in turn leads that person to walk away from the fellow on the corner. How a person dresses and holds themselves on the street, in a pub, or at a job interview could lead to the immediate labeling of themselves. This happens because humans label based on their own personality and upbringing; it is an ideology, a non-tangible belief that certain people are going to be labeled a certain way. To have a competitive advantage, companies should ensure that they fo rmulate a series of unique activities into its operations that is difficult to be imitated, thus strategy. With the video relaying the example of IKEA strategy by the use of tradeoffs, an organizational leadership has the full responsibility for ensuring that an effective strategy is achieved. Case in point, a management that focuses on common issues such as resources and competencies, limits an organization to have a viable strategy. Also, it is important to learn that strategies are better realized when executed. This is because there are emerging issues which can change how an intended strategy works. This means that timing is momentous when executing a strategy. Australia is a developed country where almost every individual has financial muscles thus the need for banks. Banks make money from the total deposits that customers make and also from the total number of loans issued (Macpherson, 2012). Banks receive competition from multinational banks (Dinc?er and Haciog?lu, n.d.). The focus of this section is on Bank of Queensland in Australia and how it can apply the above ideas on strategy to have a competitive market. Australians have many banks and other financial institutions to choose from for lending, checking and crediting services. Since strategies are far from operation efficiency, Bank of Queensland can focus on community marketing. Since Bank of Queensland is a big bank, it needs to have many branches across Australia. Besides, each branch of the bank should operate as per the behavior of a community since people need to feel comfortable with a bank. Product building is another strategy that banks can use to maintain a competitive adv antage. Most banks use low-interest rates as one of their strategies. But for Bank of Queensland, it can use product strategy of no minimum requirement for money withdrawal and also fewer charges for any transactions. A strategy such as this, is far from the goals and missions of Bank of Queensland since it will be hard for any of its competitors to be able to keep with that kind of competition because it will be deemed as not viable financially.
